I took Gavin & Kesley to the Demolition Derby out in Nephi. It was....AWESOME! I hadn't ever been to one and we almost bagged the idea because Brent and Jenna were worn out from a day of boating with Brents family (so fun!), but I really wanted to go so I made Gavin & Kesley come with me and we were all very glad we did.

Don't they look happy? Well, none of us were at first because it was SO HOT and we were stuck way up at the top of the bleachers. I sat up there and watched those dark clouds in the background slowly make their way towards us. It reminded me of a black and white cookie--just a dark wall of clouds cutting through a beautiful blue sky--very ominous. We had a front row seat to the huge dust cloud that just preceded the wind, and boy did it BLOW! We found ourselves smack dab in the middle of a very crazy MICRO-BURST! At one point I had Gavin & Kesley crouching down in between the bleacher rows for protection because I really thought the aluminum roof was going to blow off and we were already being pelted with debris. Kinda scary! The announcer said we were all going to try and ride it out for a few minutes, but shortly after said the fire marshall wanted everyone to calmly EVACUATE. So, as calmly as we could, we made our way back to our car and waited out the storm for about 20 minutes. I'm glad we didn't leave because as soon as the worst had blown by they resumed the show.
Beautiful clouds after the worst was over

I'm telling you, a derby is an AWESOME family fun night. Cars crashing into each other is surprisingly exhilarating! We loved every second of it--even the micro burst.
ROUND 1--right before the storm hit

The best crash of the night

A fleet of tractors to pull all the dead cars out after each round

Can't wait for next years Derby!

my mom has a secret desire to drive in a demolition derby. We bought her a car at the auction one year for her birthday, painted it all up, gave her a helmet and sent her on her way through the desert to crash into things. we all laughed lots, but the car was still in great condition when she was done, so they gave it to a needy family in their ward! all around fun!
We want to come next year. The people watching there is probably just as interesting.
So fun! We need to take our kids someday. Jake and I went for a date night and it was lots of fun.
We love demolition derbys! We usually go to the one at the Utah county fair but I got over to get tickets too late and they were sold out :( totally bummed!
